What is BPA?

What is BPA?

BPA stands for Bisphenol A. BPA is carbon-based synthetic compound that is used to make certain plastics and epoxy resins.

BPA exhibits hormone-like properties and contributes to a broad range of health effects.  BPA can contribute to:
Neurological effects (interferes with dopamine pathways)
Obesity
Thyroid function
Breast cancer
Prostate cancer
Brain tumors
Asthma
Reproductive and sexual behavior

BPA can leach out of plastics, especially over 20 cycles through a dishwasher.  There are no 100% microwave safe plastics.  BPA is found in many baby bottles, sippy cups, plastic utensils and water bottles.

What to do?
Purchase BPA free water bottles
Use glass, Pyrex, instead of plastic food containers
Never microwave in plastics
Wash plastics by hand
